The Noise of the World

Our lives are filled with voices. Voices from friends, family, coworkers, mentors, strangers, social media, society, and the news—the list goes on and on. Everywhere we turn, there seems to be another opinion about who we should be, how we should act, and what standard we need to meet. These expectations are often shaped by politics, religion, generational bias, and personal upbringing, creating a pressure that can feel impossible to carry. Sometimes it feels like there are so many voices telling us who we should be, and so many standards placed on us to follow perfectly, that it is impossible to measure up—and honestly, that feeling is valid. The world’s standards are exhausting because they are loud, constant, and often leave no room for peace.

Lost in the Maze of Familiar Voices

Some of you may know that I’m a pretty big nerd. I spend a lot of my free time watching Twitch streams, mostly of my favorite streamer playing horror video games. Horror games almost always involve a mystery, which is my genre of choice, and the thrill of jump scares mixed with the hilarious reactions of the players just adds to the entertainment. In one particularly intense psychological thriller, the character enters a giant room filled with twisting staircases and narrow walkways layered over one another, much like M.C. Escher’s Relativity painting. There are countless doors and no sign showing which way to go. Blasting through the room is a classical melody called Voices of Spring, playing loudly from some unknown source. As the player navigates the narrow paths, trying not to fall into the abyss, the music changes depending on the direction. If they are heading the wrong way, the melody turns dark and distorted, almost forcing them to turn around and seek the beautiful, familiar orchestral sound. After watching the character fall several times and start over again, the repeating music becomes exhausting, and the tension rises with every attempt to just get out of there. In so many ways, this mirrors our daily lives. We often follow the familiar sounds of the voices we hear most often, even when they are not peaceful, simply because they are the loudest.

The Symphony of God’s Voice

But there is another melody available to us—one we often do not stop long enough to search for. It is the sweet symphony of our Heavenly Father’s voice. Unlike the aggressive noise of the world, His voice is full of peace, love, and gentle invitation. He beckons us closer to Him, away from the blaring standards of the world and onto a path filled with His glory. The beautiful thing is that His voice is deeply personal. It will never sound exactly the same for each person because He is a personal God in close relationship with you. He speaks in ways that are most kind to you, in a voice your heart can recognize. His melody brings peace where the world brings pressure.

The Daily Choice to Listen

The first step is learning to recognize His voice, and that part is deeply personal. The second step is choosing to listen and follow—and that part is ours. It may not become the first voice we hear overnight, especially if we have wandered far from Him, and it may take navigating some narrow pathways before His melody becomes familiar again. Will we fall into the abyss every once in a while? Absolutely. We all stumble. But every day gives us another opportunity to begin again and choose which voices we will follow. This is not about perfection; it is about practice. As we continue to seek Him daily, His voice becomes easier to recognize, and His peace becomes stronger than the noise around us.
