God is in Control
This summer, we had the incredible opportunity to bring ROYAL Skate Camp to San Diego for the very first time. With professional skateboarder Beaver Fleming by our side and a few local skaters ready to roll, we were set for a week of progression—on the board and in the Word.
To be honest—going into it, we thought filling the camp would be easy. We had the plan, the schedule, the connections, and the vision. San Diego is full of skaters, churches near skateparks, and endless opportunities. But God had a different plan—a better one. Our numbers were smaller than expected, and at first, we were surprised. But God reminded us: He is in control.
That plan led us to meet a small but mighty group of campers and connect with a few other kids along the way. From day one, it was clear—this week was never about filling a van. It was about investing deeply in the people God placed right in front of us.
God Leads, We Follow
When our first camper arrived Monday morning, we knew the week was going to be special. We started each day at North Coast Calvary Chapel, gathered outdoors with open Bibles and open hearts. Monday kicked off with “R” in our ROYAL acronym—REAL. We got to know our first camper—his passion for skateboarding, but even more, his hunger to grow in his faith.
After time in the Word, we headed to local skateparks, top-tier private ramps, and back to the church to close the day. That first session was real indeed—a God-appointed start to something unforgettable.
As the week rolled on, God kept bringing new connections—kids at the parks, local skaters who joined for a session or two, and moments we couldn’t have planned if we tried. Every morning in Scripture set the tone, filling us with joy that carried into the parks. We pushed each other to try new tricks, cheered each other on, and shared conversations that went far beyond skateboarding.
By Thursday, our legs were tired, but our spirits were on fire. We began the week wondering why we didn’t fill the van—and ended it overwhelmed with gratitude for exactly who God brought into our circle.
The One
This camp reminded us of Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:12–14:
“What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.”
It’s not about numbers. It’s about the one. This week, each camper who joined us was not “small attendance” — they were the exact ones God had in mind from the very beginning.
San Diego Skate Camp will always remind us: God’s plan is greater, His timing is perfect, and His love is personal. We can’t wait to see who He’s already preparing for next summer—because if this year taught us anything, it’s that even just one life impacted for Christ is worth it all.
